Under normal circumstances a weave can help you maintain healthy hair because, you are not combing, curling and abusing your hair.

As to how long to leave it in depends on a few things, does your hair tangle? Have you been keeping your hair and extensions clean? Did you get the PROPER extensions (DO NOT GET GLUE INS -the rip out your hair)?

You can wash your hair and extensions but you have to be careful. My sister washes and wears her weave. She and I both get great information from this website.

When you put a weave in, you aren't exposing your own hair to curling irons and other damaging things.. so it isn't 'healthy' but it isn't harmful.

you leaving it in depends on if you glue it in or sew it in.. sewing usually lasts longer... you head is still able to breath while the weave is still in.

Hair weaves protect you hair from damage especially if done correctly. They can usually last from 2-4months. Your real hair breathes fine. I've worn a weave for about two years and my hair has grown very long.
